My Students

There is something special about the students in my school and in my classroom. These students are independent, protective, and eager. Students who I spend time with day in and day out come from very low income families and from very diverse backgrounds. These students need the support and rapport from the individuals who interact with them daily within the school community. Based on the high needs of these students, each school day can be challenging but rewarding.

Each student in my classroom is very eager to learn and to grow, however, with the challenges they face outside of the classroom they need extra support within the classroom.

Our students learn a lot of key life lessons within the school day such as appropriately using social skills, and the ins and outs of collaboration with their peers or any individual they may encounter during the day. Using play within the classroom has made a huge impact with how my students are communicating with each other and how they are growing their social skills to help them grow in their academics.

My Project

Growing up in a world that is consumed with technology students are finding it harder to build a foundation of social skills that are necessary for daily interactions now as students, and later as adults. Throughout the year I have been working toward a classroom that is full of students that are communicating and communicating respectfully with those around them. In order to accomplish this I incorporated play into a lot of our daily learning. During math and reading stations students are using academic play to advance their learning. From the beginning of the year to now I can see a huge shift in their social skills as they are collaborating daily through academic play. By using the materials requested, such as Magna-Tiles, Interlox and Tinker Toys I can promote social skills through play within our classroom.

The difference in our students from being exposed to social skills through play has drastically impacted their academic learning because collaboration is such an important piece to the academic puzzle.

My students are prompted and encouraged to collaborate with peers on a daily basis. Students sometimes struggle with being able to take their thoughts and put them in a way that is respectful and easily received by others. By using the materials requested I will be able to incorporate more play into the classroom and be able to pair it with academic learning as well as promoting creative and critical thinking which will result in advancing our students social skills as well. Some of the best learning takes place when students are unaware of all that they are actually learning.

I have seen how greatly impacted my students already have been from using play to promote social skills. I know that with these materials our students will be able to benefit even more.
