My Project

This project is filled with items to create a supportive calming area in my classroom. I teach first grade in an economically disadvantaged area. Our students often come to school with high emotional burdens that interfere with their ability to access learning. Creating calming areas helps to promote self lifelong self-regulation skills that are critical to being able to function within a classroom and wider community.

Items like pillows, soft rugs, and weighted animals bring a sense of comfort and calm to little bodies when escalated.

Colored lighting, creates a calming ambiance and white noise helps calm the nervous system. A variety of fidget and sensory tools allow students to be able to refocus on the tasks at hand. Having water bottle holders allows students to keep hydrated right in their working areas to help keep their bodies fueled!
