My Students

The child becomes largely what it is taught; hence we must watch what we teach it, and how we live before it- Jane Addams. Lets promote diversity, respect and critical thinking in my 4th grade class.

My school is filled of students that come from many diverse and rich backgrounds but so often they only see the differences amongst themselves and their classmates.

The diversity amongst my students is so great that we have a variety of languages spoken in my school such as English, Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Italian and Patois. The school reflects the diversity of the neighborhood and I want students to respect all differences.

My Project

With the resources I hope to receive I would create a stimulating and engaging environment where students will explore discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes. As my students explore their role in promoting a society based on justice and equality students will be placed in situations where discrimination will be simulated. Throughout class discussions and role playing students will discuss the importance for showing respect for others. As a culminating activity write an essay responding to the question "What can you do to promote respect in the classroom, school and in society?"

As an educator it is my job to produce active citizens in society and teaching diversity and multiculturalism in conjunction with the standard curriculum leads to well rounded students who become active citizens.
