My Students

No two days are alike in an elementary school, and no two students are alike in my classroom! The students in my classroom are energetic, creative, and independent. They love engaging lessons that challenge them.

When they come to school in the mornings, they are excited to learn and ready to work hard!

Our school is in a rural, small town in Indiana. We are a Title I school with approximately 52% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. The students come from various backgrounds. Some have ample opportunities presented to them, and some only have school as a safe place. School becomes a place for them to get away from their worries and feel secure.

Each child in my classroom is special and has their own unique qualities. Since they are so different, their learning styles and methods also vary greatly. Because of this, my students are given a variety of learning opportunities to be sure that their needs are met, they use their full potential, and they are successful in 4th grade!

My Project

Storyworks is a Scholastic magazine that ignites a sense of wonder and a spark of curiosity in readers. In each issue of Storyworks, there is a variety of genres, including nonfiction, fiction, drama, poetry, etc. The 32 page magazine is filled with text that engages and excites students. It is so much more appealing than just using a textbook or text copied from the school copier.

Storyworks is an amazing resource to meet all reading levels of students in my classroom!

There are a variety of differentiation tools to help struggling readers and English Language Learners. On the online component of Storyworks, there are articles at different reading levels, audio versions, and "Behind the Scenes" videos to build background knowledge on the topics of the articles in the magazine. There is also access to scaffolded lessons and project-based activities as another way to help reach all learners, no matter their reading abilities.

Another fascinating feature of Storyworks is its ability to help students become lifelong learners and excel in their reading skills. For every article in the magazine, there are critical thinking questions and activities that focus on ELA skills to build reading, writing, and test-taking confidence. The articles also integrate science and social studies topics.

Through Storyworks, each student will be able to make connections, find articles that interest them, and work towards becoming lifelong readers!
