My Project

We are excited to introduce our Hip-Hop SEL program, a unique and innovative initiative designed for our 4th and 5th graders. This program aims to engage students with hip-hop culture through reading, listening to poetry and lyrics, and creating their own spoken word poems and hip-hop songs. We have already secured two grants from Learning for Justice and Voya Unsung Heroes, but we still need additional funds to ensure the program runs in its entirety.

My students expressed their enthusiasm for hip-hop in a multiple choice survey and I see this as an opportunity to build literacy and social-emotional growth and also affirm and center students’ experiences.

Your donations will support the second half of the program where students will be able to put into practice the literacy skills they’ve developed by creating their own songs. Students will have the chance to play with sound and create their own beats while developing computer literacy and audio engineering skills. The headphones and studio monitors will allow students to listen to the music they create. The whiteboard will be used for instructional purposes and to plan and write lyrics. Students will collaborate to create their own songs that reflect their experiences and rich cultural histories, as well as those of others. In this process, students will tap into the unique skills they already possess including language manipulation, creativity, rhythm, wit, and humor.

Your generous donations will directly impact the lives of our students, giving them the tools and opportunity to express themselves, develop greater self-awareness and empathy, and become more fluent and confident readers, writers, and creative problem-solvers.

If you are interested in more information regarding the specifics of the program curriculum, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you for considering helping us empower the next generation!
