Promoting Independence In Students With Autism

Help me give my students predictability and alternate modes of communication through visual schedules, timers and durable pictures for my non-verbal students to use to communicate, which I’ll create using the laminator and hook and loop dots.

My Project

Visual supports, whether it be for daily routines, step-by-step directions, communication or transitions, are crucial for students with autism in becoming independent of adult promoting and support. Visual supports reduce anxiety by providing predictability and structure.

Items like the laminator, laminating pouches, hook and loop dots and pocket charts will allow me to create durable visual schedules and communication systems for our non-verbal students.

Developing functional communication in our students will allow them to advocate for themselves, get their basic needs met, express their preferences and ultimately reduce frustration and challenging behaviors.
