My Students

In order to achieve our learning objectives, my students need to be surrounded by literacy activities that are appealing to all types of learners. Many of the materials currently in our classroom have failed to provide engaging and developmentally appropriate ways to promote literacy.

My students are in a high-poverty, Early Childhood Education classroom.

They are extremely active, bright, and inquisitive. However, they began the school year at a literacy level far below where it should have been. My challenge as a teacher has been to channel their energy and natural ability in order to expose them to various aspects of literacy, such as phonemic awareness, print concepts, and reading comprehension. I've been amazed by the progress my students have made. Many of them have learned all of their letters and letter sounds. Several students have started associating letters with pictures they draw, or writing simple words in their journal entries. I can only imagine the progress that is still possible.

My Project

The largest component of my project is a teaching easel that will allow for an engaging and interactive group time. I am most excited about utilizing the felt board to help students retell and act out stories. I will use the pocket chart to help my students develop a stronger vocabulary and to understand the directionality of print. The remaining components of my project will provide activities that my students can complete independently in centers. I know that they will enjoy the new writing center and the sight-word puzzles. The alphabet puzzle will be engaging for my students who love puzzles and are struggling with learning their letters.

I wake up every day inspired and energized by the progress my students have made.

The resources in this project will ensure that my students continue their success and master all of our learning objectives. Early childhood is the most fundamental and essential time to build strong literacy skills. Donations to this project will move my students on the path to success in their academic careers.
