Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school district has been providing 100% remote teaching since August 2020, and I am requesting books and basic materials to provide my students the best quality instruction they deserve. For this project, I am requesting books about children of different colors and cultures, as well as white boards and markers students can use to record their feelings and ideas.
My preschool program is called Expanded Transitional Kindergarten/Preschool Collaborative Classroom (ETK/PCC).
It includes eight students with disabilities and sixteen students without disabilities. This is an innovative and inclusive preschool model where students with special needs learn, play, and grow alongside their typically-developing peers. Research has shown time and time again that these inclusive classrooms are beneficial to both students with and without disabilities, while building a culture of compassion, acceptance, and friendships without boundaries.
We are a Title l school that receives federal funds to support at-risk students living at or near the poverty line. Title l aims to bridge the gap between low-income students and other students.
My Project
My class is very diverse and made up of more than 90% students of color. I believe it is important for everyone, especially preschoolers who are just beginning to develop their sense of identity, to be exposed to books by authors of color.
Books written about children of different colors and cultures will allow my students to identify with, and feel empowered by, the strong characters whose skin color looks just like theirs.
While learning remotely from home, students will also be able to express their feelings and record their thoughts and observations using laptop white boards.
