Promoting Biliteracy In 2nd Grade

My students need books, such as Niños alrededor del mundo and Tomas and the Library Lady, that are in English and Spanish in all subjects. My students need read to self phone to help with fluency.

My Students

Ours students receive their instruction half of the day in English and the other half of the day in Spanish. One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way. Frank Smith

We are a wonderful school with 700 wonderful students.

Almost half of these students have Spanish as a first language. Our school strives to teach in a way our students best learn. One way is the dual language program. Spanish-speaking students get to continue learning in their language while they continue to build English as their second language. Our English speakers continue to reinforce their English skills while obtaining a second language.

My Project

All of our students will benefit from having these books in Spanish and English. They will listen to the book in both languages. They will learn the same vocabulary in different languages. We are promoting biliteracy in second grade! They will also benefit from the read to self phones to continue their fluency reading in Spanish and English while listening to themselves read.

These donations will continue to support our biliterate program.

Students will be able to read, write, speak about all content areas as well as communicate socially in both Spanish and English. These students will gain an invaluable skill; communicating in two languages. We are giving these students a tool that they will carry with them through their lives.
