My Project

This school-wide proposal will use a gardening activity to increase the science engagement of low-performing students and mature them, academically, by fostering interactions with higher grade students in a leadership program. OPH Gardens will involve training Environmental Science students (primarily 220 in 9th grade; 100 very low-performing) in soil science and training Leadership Academy students (30 in 11th and 12th grades) in project (materials and labor) planning.

Students will learn about garden planning and planting skills with emphasis on vegetables that will be grown, including cucumbers, herbs, okra, pole beans, and tomatoes.

These vegetables will be grown for the benefit of the OPH monthly community food distribution. Student learning will be assessed by a pre-planting and post-harvest quiz. This activity will bring real environmental interactions into focus for these frequently disengaged students.

Many of the lower-performing ninth graders have not adapted to the reality that every moment counts in high school. They have difficulty moving from that middle school mentality of redoing things at the last moment to recover a grade. This activity, gardening, will demonstrate to the students that progress is gained by steady, consistent work and the results had at the end of a project are the culmination of this steady work. A garden project is an excellent example of this. We predict that this activity will increase the involved students' academic engagement in Environmental Science by at least one-half of a grade point. The Leadership students will gain experience in mentorship by helping the lower-performing ninth graders realize that the time to begin thinking about graduation is now, not next year after a disastrous first year. We will also use a retrospective survey to measure students' opinions about this project and use this to modify the program for future years.
