Our students come to school eager to learn, but often behind. A study in 2003 found that children from high-income families are exposed to 30 million more words than children from families on welfare. As teachers we need to not only teach, but ACCELERATE growth if we are ever going to close the gap.
MLK serves students in grade Pre-K through Grade 8 within the neighborhood they live as one the of the last community schools left in our district.
Our students are the most loving people you will every meet, but also in need of a lot of the basic materials other schools and districts can sometimes take for granted. As teachers of these students we feel responsible for not only getting our students to meet the new common core standards, but for instilling a sense that we can accelerate progress and exceed them. As such, our teachers work diligently to make data driven instruction decisions that takes into account what we know about teaching and learning, the formative assessments we give and how we use that information in a meaningful way week-to-week in data teams.
In order to meet these goals and make data teams truly drive our instruction we are looking for a projector and computer speakers to be able to project data and facilitate conversations around next steps. We also want to engage our students in interactive learning and use technology to give them the virtual field trips that build background knowledge that allows them to make meaningful connections with the content in our curriculum. As a result of this work together, students will receive high quality instruction that meets them right above where they are and pushes them to the next level of rigorous work. Our students deserve to feel like scholars who have the knowledge they need to grapple with problems of practice presented to them and not lack the necessary foundational skills simply because of location. We want to accelerate growth in our students and inspire a standard of excellence in order to close the growing achievement gap.
As an Intervention Specialist, I work with students from Pre-K through Grade 8.
Together with teachers we are always looking at what students know, what they need to know and how we are going to get them there. We have a lot of work to do and a sense of urgency that every minute counts with our kids. Using the projector and speakers to improve the teaching and learning cycle will help us meet the needs of ALL of our learners.
