Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students are going to change the world! They have big dreams, but as a school we sometimes lack the means to turn these dreams into reality. My students live in a vibrant community that is rich in culture, despite lacking economic resources.

My students are diverse leaders, leading change in the school and community as they advocate for LGBT, immigrant, women, and people of color’s rights. I believe in my students, and am committed to providing them with the same resources that students at the most affluent schools receive.

We are a ProjectLIT classroom, and my students have read diverse books that are relevant to their own lived experiences. In just one semester, they read The Hate U Give, The Poet X, Pedro & Me, Speak, and Long Way Down. They are very proud of all the books they have read, and are excited to read more this school year!

After reading Angie Thomas' novel, The Hate U Give, my students developed a love for literacy by reading relevant texts about issues that they care about. Just as the printed word is a text that can be analyzed and discussed, film analysis is also a valuable exercise that allows them to practice their critical thinking skills.

In Their Own Words

We want to promote a love of reading and awareness of social issues at our school. We want to organize a field trip for all of the students that have read The Hate U Give, so that we can continue to inform ourselves about this issue, and come up with ways to reduce the racial injustice in our communities.

Reading the novel made us sad, mad, and hopeful for a future where families no longer have to bury their loved ones. We hope that the field trip will unite the students and inspire a sense of activism. Some of our student leaders will lead classroom discussions after the trip, so that we can process our emotions and brainstorm how we can turn our grief into action.

In the novel, Starr's childhood friend is killed by a police officer, because of stereotypes and misunderstandings. The students at our school know what this feels like, because we also dealt with this recently. Watching The Hate U Give will remind us that we are not alone, and that we have the power to change negative situations.
