Help Ms. Ofstie

I am a high school English Language Development teacher at a high-need school in Southern California. I teach level 2 ELD (low-intermediate) to mixed 9th-12th grade classes, as well as level 4 (advanced) to 11th graders. My students come from several different countries, such as China, Vietnam, Mexico, El Salvador, Burma, Cambodia, and Honduras.

My students need a lot of help with their writing. Writing effectively is one of the most difficult skills to learn when you're learning a new language. In level 2 we need to work on skills such as complete sentences, paragraphing, main idea/supporting details, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and many others. In level 4, we work on essays, figurative language, writing effective introductions and conclusions, idiomatic expressions, and many other things. I have an overhead projector in the room that I have tried to utilize as much as possible, but it is difficult when I don't have enough transparencies and overhead markers for everyone. Projecting student writing on the screen becomes a very time-inefficient endeavor.

I would love to have a document camera in my classroom. A document camera is similar to an overhead projector, but instead of using transparencies and markers, you can place any piece of paper on it, and it will project it up on the screen. This would provide endless opportunities for my students. I could model effective writing on it, we could use it for peer editing, and I could even project a page of a book or article easily up on the screen. It will eliminate the need to pass around transparencies and wait for markers. Students will be able to write on notebook paper, and instantaneously project it.

Your help will make it possible for my students to look at each other's writing and improve their writing skills tremendously. Many of my students are college-bound, and this document camera will help me make sure that they have the writing skills needed to be successful in college. Writing in a second language can be very difficult, but your generous donation will help many students become better, more confident writers. Thank you.
