My Students

I teach a dynamic group of inner-city students who have one way or another landed themselves in an alternative school. About 80% of the youth I service have IEP's and receive individualized interventions due to academic functioning level (which is most times 3-4 years below grade level) and excessive behaviors. Many of these kids lack exposure and have never experienced the basic joys of high school (dances, proms, fieldtrips, computer-lab, etc.) due to behaviors, finances, among other contributing factors associated with poverty.

What makes them dynamic is their untapped potential and resilience.

When you break through their walls and hear their true story, it gives testament to how strong and smart they truly are for choosing to stay in school. Once I took a senior on a fieldtrip who had never been to the Zoo. He explained that due to his behavior, he was never allowed to attend. Heartbreaking! Many of my students have been placed in an alternative setting due to a learning disability. 90% of them still suffer from traumatic memories of being a relocating youth during Hurricane Katrina. For many students, schools, especially those located outside of New Orleans, have been unaccepting.

My Project

Yesterday, I found myself standing in the middle of class, holding a shorted out speaker wire in place on our a sub-par projector, so that we could hear the content, when I had a revelation: A Donnorschoose project for a new projector. Through my previous project, I was able to broaden the horizons of many of my students, exposing them to a whole new world of possibilities. We are now faced with the task of sharing our findings with our fellow classmates, through in class presentations, and educational partners, through student exhibitions. The ugly truth is that our school doesn't have a single smart board, and its difficult to teach in an engaging manner while holding a wire in place so that our projector can have sound (talk about multitasking). This is not an actual project, but a means for students to share and engage in there own projects. Please help us push forward by donating to our cause today.
