Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My ESL students face unique challenges when it comes to learning. They struggle with the nature of their disability and the hurdles of integrating into a new culture with a different language and customs.

Learning a new language and integrating into a new culture is a challenging experience.

My students are English Language Learners ranging in ages between 14-21. Our school is located in a high poverty section in New York and only houses students with disabilities. Disabilities in our school range from severe to mild autism, multiple disabilities, intellectual disabilities and other health impairments. I am confident that with the right resources learning English can be facilitated and enhanced through the use of technology.

My Project

While our teaching methods are effective, the use of technology in the classroom can enhance and facilitate the learning experiences even further. Technology allows for more immediate access to the vast reservoir of relevant educational materials available on the internet. Teaching science, health and nutrition, language arts, U.S. History, social studies or financial independence will be more relevant and easier to access.

My students learn best through the use of visual supports; such as pictures and video.

Technology has certainly facilitated teaching and learning for all students, especially for my students. We need a projector to be able to see larger images and research lessons on the internet. I have noticed that whenever my class has access to one of the few projectors available in the school, their participation increases and engagement in the lesson improves.
