This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a high needs and low-income area. Kindergarten is the first time that many of my students step into a school and a classroom. This is the first time they are learning and making new friends. They come into school excited and eager to learn no matter the challenges that they face every day.

My Project

Starting in kindergarten can be extremely overwhelming, especially during these tough times. This school year is going to be unlike any other we have experienced. We will be returning to the classroom for the first time since March after learning from home. Unfortunately with huge budget cuts to education for this school year, my students are in need of basic school supplies to start off the year and be successful.

Being that my students are coming from low-income households, having students bring in their own school supplies is very difficult.

I want my students to start off the year with fresh notebooks and folders that they can use for their homework, writing workshops, and use for our phonics program. Being that the students will not be able to share supplies with each other for probably most of the school year, I want to make sure that they have pencils to use so that they can write and crayons for coloring. Those two supplies are always breaking so quickly, especially in kindergarten, so having extras for them to always have is extremely important.
