Our middle school serves nearly 800 students in grades sixth through eighth. At least a third of these students qualify for free lunch, and many in this group are currently homeless. School provides nutritious breakfasts and lunches Monday through Friday during the school year. But what do these children eat Saturdays and Sundays?
Children experiencing homelessness don't always have someone to take them to a shelter or food bank.
Many teens and pre-teens who are experiencing homelessness often wouldn't feel comfortable asking strangers for help, even if they knew who to ask. Project Sandwich was started by a local teen who saw many of her peers tired and stressed from lack of food. She decided to do something about it, so she and her family started filling lunch bags for those students to have for the weekend. Her idea was a big success at her school, so she wants it to be a part of every school in our community. I, along with my Speech and Debate students, hope to make Project Sandwich a part of our school this year, and we can only do it with your support.
My Project
The chicken salad, meat sticks, granola, fruit cups, and other food items are things many of our students consider full meals, because they don't have a reliable food source, and are happy to get anything to eat. The items in my cart will provide students with breakfast and lunch items for the days they are not at school, which is the time many of them worry about.
Students are not in school for two weeks during winter break, and this means many won't have a reliable food source for up to 14 days straight.
For most of us, the winter break is much anticipated, but this is the case for many students at school. They worry about having enough to eat. This is not safe for a growing teen's physical or emotional well-being.
