My Students

My classroom is a 'music exploration and creation center,' where my students sing, play instruments, read notation, compose, improvise, and analyze music, understand relationships between music and other arts and cultures, and move and dance to music while having the time of time of their lives!

The Woodstation Singers are the auditioned singing group of W.

Elementary School. They represent the students who, in our school, care the most about music and its history and significance, both cultural and personal. They not only love to sing, but they also love to connect with the song and connect with each other through the song. They understand that music is not merely something they do, but that it also expresses who and what they are. For these students, the music room at W. Elementary School has become their world, their sanctuary. It is the place where, on a regular basis, they express themselves with song and immerse themselves in the world of music knowledge and skills. I fully expect them to continue to pursue their musical interests and dreams in middle and high school and perhaps beyond.

My Project

While much of my time is spent teaching musical skills to my students, I am constantly reminding them that music has a national and global existence with a rich history and a constantly changing present. I make great use recordings to demonstrate what has gone on before and why it is important for today's music. I use vinyl LP's in my classroom to show that music can become a physical object that can be collected and treasured as it brings a potential lifetime of enjoyment. I urge my students to start their own collections of music (whether vinyl, CD, or digital download), and I show them that their collection will be a part of the story of their lives. In using recordings, I also teach the stories about who made them and where they were made, which is how Nashville, Tennessee became relevant to my work with the Woodstation Singers.

With this trip to Nashville, my students will experience the story of American music, the people who made and recorded it, and the places where it was performed and recorded.

At the Ryman Auditorium, my students will get to stand on the stage where bluegrass music was invented. At the Country Music Hall of Fame, they will see the instruments that created the Bakersfield Sound, and at Third Man Records, they will sing and make their own record that will become part of the story of American music.
