Increasing literacy and interest in reading have become a passion of mine, especially post-pandemic. I especially want to ensure that I am taking steps to highlight stories from groups of people that tend to be minimized and topics that are difficult to navigate if you haven't planned how to address them. One way I've managed to successfully do this is through Project LIT, an after-school book club for all readers.
In Project LIT, we honor the work of communities whose stories are often untold or silenced.
Some students have direct connections to these communities while others are just beginning to interact with them. We also uncover and strive to understand our intersectional identities through literature. We have necessary conversations about tricky subjects. Students grapple with world problems and think about how representing different voices through literature increases awareness. Some titles contain mature topics, but we approach them bravely. The learners in this group lead the discussion brilliantly!
The students who join this club are world changers! They are prepared to tackle the problems of tomorrow today! This project is for Thirst by Varsha Bajaj, where we will be able to discuss water scarcity and privilege. All readers are allowed to keep the novels once our discussion is finished and encouraged to share them with others, which is how we increase the reach of our club.
