My Students

The Internet has opened up a world of possibilities for learning - videos of science in action, awe-inspiring pictures news & history, interactive games for learning vocabulary and math. Unfortunately for my students, all those possibilities are trapped behind a fading monitor from 1998.

My students come from all over the world, together they speak 9 languages.

They are highly visual learners, who love to see the things we talk about. Their eyes light up when we talk about science, hands shoot up and want to know more about the minerals and rocks, or what evaporation looks like. Just this week when I described the heat of the center of the earth - there were audible gasps. Imagine the wonder and awe if they could see a National Geographic special on the same subject. They are hungry to learn more about the world around them and deserve a chance to see it projected into their classroom.

My Project

With a projector, my students will... travel deep into the oceans, see volcanoes explode, play an interactive jeopardy review game, learn about technology, soar through space, watch the moon landing... the list could go on and on. I will be able to use a web camera to project worksheets onto the screen so students can follow along at the same time. Our students will be able to video chat with classrooms a world away. We will watch videos and learn about the cultures from their home countries - Bosnia, Guinea, Eritrea, Cameroon, and so many more. We also need pencils and a sharpener, which will let my students focus their energy where they really need it - on learning the material in front of them, instead of worrying about buying pencils at home. I don't ever want a student to have to worry about bringing pencils to school again.

This projector is a game changer.

It levels the playing field with students in more affluent classrooms. It will "show" my students, where before I could only tell. Quite simply, this effort will project hope into my classroom - a hope that my students might one day see many of these wonders with their own eyes. A hope that their minds will be captured, their imaginations spurred. A hope that will nurture their love of learning from now until the day they graduate from college.
