My Project

My project has a majority of sensory toys involved as this year I have taken on a younger caseload that needs more investigative play. The investigative and exploratory play that comes with these toys provides a great base for ample opportunities at expanding utterances, teaching vocabulary, improving pragmatic skills through play, and creating novel sentences through their internal motivation to play. By creating that motivation we can begin the process of joint attention which is the basis of language.

My cart consists of a variety of sensory outlets for the children in the squishes, Play-Doh, the kinetic sand, the fidget bands for the toys.

The Legos and magnetic tiles are wonderful for spatial prepositions, teamwork, following directions, and cause and effect. The car rug allows for turn-taking, direction following such as “park at the store”, and the ability to parallel play with kids that don’t understand. The dinosaurs and farm allow the kids creativity to come out and to learn how to play alongside other kids while being immersed in a multitude of language opportunities. The boards and snacks are for groups because after a hard session, who doesn’t like a snack?

Lastly, these items will help me to make an inviting and warm space for all the various needs that I get to work with throughout the day. Keeping the room active with variety and clean will bring great motivation, competence and relatedness to all the students who come through. I greatly appreciate the DonorsChoose organization for making things possible like this for providers like me.
