My Students

What is English? English is more than just words on a page or memorizing spelling words, English is all around us. Our classroom is a safe place where students can create, question, and discuss social issues with all components of English - art, music, literature, and videos.

My students come from various backgrounds and bring so much to our classroom.

They are students who are making the transition to high school while dealing with real life issues. Their families live in poverty stricken urban areas. As a teacher I have to get students motivated. I do this with the texts I bring into the classroom and the learning activities we complete. My students are determined to be the first in their families to graduate high school and attend college. Many of my students know that hard work is the only way they can make their goals reality. We are a school that believes that education really is the great equalizer. Our students embody the character and determination of the man we are named after, Frederick Douglass.

My Project

Our school runs out of printing paper, and it can be hard for my special education and English language learners to complete assignments without their graphic organizers. I share the classroom with a teacher and as a result have minimal board space. The projector will allow me to model for the student and the students to view and hear lessons in the classroom. My students have many different learning styles. Motivation comes from students when they can excel in the classroom. Your donation will help me reach all my students whether they are visual or audio learners.

My students need an LCD projector to study English through art, music, videos, and literature.

This will help all learning styles thrive in the classroom. Your donation will help my students become critical thinkers and improve their intrinsic motivation. Let's help these kids graduate!
