My Project
I am a first-year teacher in a Center-Based Autism Program. My students are in Kindergarten and First Grade, but developmentally, they are spread across a wide spectrum. Regardless of academic ability, my students all have social and communication goals in their Individual Education Plans. I have found that the best way to reach these exceptional students is to play with them, and engage on their level. My paraprofessionals and I do this daily, but at this point in the school year, they have played with all the toys before, and are in need of something new and exciting. With such a heavy focus on social strategies and communication skills, I would love to be able to provide my students with new materials that can reinforce turn-taking, sharing, and problem-solving, as well as providing the opportunity to learn new language, and self-advocacy skills.
