Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the school year I would like to create learners who appreciate learning as a vehicle to achieve social, emotional and academic goals. To achieve this goal, I decided to teach literacy through project based learning and implement writers' notebooks among my third graders.

My school is a general population school, however, we have a diverse population of English language learners.

I would describe my school as a flower pot because it plays an important role in growing learners in a community that faces so many social and economical challenges. One of the greatest challenges our students face is displacement in temporary housing. Owing to this fact there is a high percentage of tardiness and absenteeism among my students. Despite some of these challenges students have shown resilience and an appreciation for learning.

My Project

My students need supplies such as pencils, writing supplies, supplies storage, storage bins for reading materials, an Elmo document projector and timer. The materials requested are done so with the intention to improve writing and literacy skills in my classroom. I would like to improve the engagement and delivery of literacy among my students. This year I would like to do this by implementing project based learning to foster engagement. The writing supplies requested are intended to build a strong writing center in my classroom where my students and I can spend time not only editing writing pieces but reflect meta cognitively. The Elmo projector would give my students a chance to learn vicariously as I or other students model best practices in writing using work samples and in return improving their own writing. Some of the other materials requested will be used to revamp the organizational layout of the physical classroom and make supplies accessible for all students. The materials requested will help my students as we progress towards achieving social, emotional and academic goals.

My project will make a difference with the way my learners appreciate reading the word to read the world and vice versa.

This project would give my students an opportunity to improve their reading and writing skills and ultimately improving their reading and writing scores. I can imagine the level of engagement in my classroom having established new reading and writing routines through project based work and writers' notebooks.
