Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is an environmental STEM lab. I teach all elementary grades from Kindergarten to grade 5 and see about 300 students a week. My students are filled with curiosity and wonder for our great big world and never cease to pose great questions.

My students live in a very urban Brooklyn neighborhood and come from low socioeconomic families.

About 30% are English language learners, although many more students speak another language at home. What they lack in resources and experiences beyond the neighborhood, they more than make up for in their wonder and excitement for the world. My goal is to create learning experiences that bring to life the treasures of our natural and built environments using the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

My Project

Whether I am teaching about how wildlife biologists study animals in the field, how engineers build more efficient maglev trains, or how forestry management safeguards our watersheds, students need a tool to demonstrate what they have learned.

In order to unleash creativity, Powtoon offers an engaging platform to create videos and cartoons.

Class content is more memorable and impactful with the tools provided on the platform. In addition, the platform allows the opportunity for students to collaborate and problem-solve as they create a storyboard and add fun and engaging images to their videos. A yearly subscription would allow me to use the platform with multiple classes and gain access to all of the premium photos and videos.
