My Students

My students range from 11-14 years old. They are curious, full of youthful energy, and are fun to be around. These days they face challenges brought about by the global pandemic that has been going on for much longer than anyone ever imagined.

Working in this middle school setting, I witness these maturing adolescence and am in awe of their resilience in a day and age so different than my own.

I can never fully put myself in their shoes, and though at times it seems that these students need to be taught about life, I have realized that they have their own stories and experiences to share.

These students enjoy being challenged- I know this because every day they show up and give it another go. They are born leaders and support each other's learning. They thrive and succeed as a group, and I respect the way they express themselves. They make me proud to be a teacher.

My Project

To revive our knowledge of the places we live here in Hawaii is the goal of this project. Students studying the different regions and their biological species, such as plants and animals that exist and thrive throughout this island chain are making connections to the unique places they call home. As students become scientists and anthropologists, the mountains, waters, rains and winds, the stories, songs and chants, and all the living things that make the place they call home unique will come to life in this project. The information they retrieve will certainly become a snapshot of a time and place for future generations to learn from.
