My Project

Last school year was the first time the majority of my students (K-5) learned to code. Those that know a bit more about coding have been looking forward to using robots. We are hoping this will be the first school year we get to use robots! I have been using online resources to teach coding, but there is nothing that excites students more than hands-on learning! This is why I am seeking for funding to help purchase robots for the students. The Mouse bots will help younger students understand the concept of coding, and programming Sphero Minis and Dash bots will be fun and challenging for the older students.

Using robots will help students gain transferrable life skills and allow for cross-curricular activities such as integrating coding into math, science, and language arts.

Working in small groups will teach students to communicate and collaborate with one another. Programming robots will encourage students to use critical thinking skills to problem solve. Students will also be able to express creativity and build perseverance. I hope that the learning we do in Technology class will transfer over to their classrooms and into their personal lives.

Coding is everywhere. I want as many of the 500+ students I work with to move beyond consumers to creators of computer science. Never-heard-of-before job titles are starting to pop up for people with coding backgrounds. The sooner students start to learn about coding the more likely they will continue to pursue an education in computer science, which will open a doorway to more opportunities. One day I hope that my students will be able to use coding to help change the world and make it a better place for all.
