Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with a group of amazing students that do their best to excel in their education. They are a group of kids that live in a low-income community and are not provided with many of the tools that larger, more affluent students have access too. I have the privilege of guiding special education students through English and History curriculum. Most of our students come from low-income families and it is often difficult to get parental support in terms of homework and projects. The students are always willing to put forth their best effort and I am always trying to find new ways to inspire them to better themselves.

My Project

I work with a combination of special education and low-income students that work hard every day to do their best with the supplies they are given. They love working on projects that allow their creative side to come out. I am aiming to work on being as innovative with my ideas as possible in order to motivate my students. Many of my students have a 2nd to 3rd-grade reading level and need lots of extra tools to help them excel. These tools are often found at this conference and the presenters are great at explaining how they will work best with each population of students.

I am new to teaching, so having the opportunity to access new and exciting ways to teach is very important to me.

Last year was my first year attending the CATE conference and I walked away motivated and excited to show my students how learning can be fun. Technology is the new way of reaching students and many of the ideas that are shared are ways to access free technology and how to apply it to the lessons we are trying to teach our students. The saying "don't reinvent the wheel" is often used and I feel this is a perfect example of how new teachers can take what is working best from experienced teachers, and bring it back to my school and use it.

My English Department has been praised for showing an increase in their achievements over the past couple years and the valuable information gathered at the CATE conference is a big part of the reason why. This conference has been an amazing asset in helping me reach my students in ways that interest them.
