My Students

Our school is a small K-12 public magnet school located in an urban setting. We have a diverse student body. A large percentage of students are on free or reduced lunch. In my classes, I have English Language Learners (ELL), students who receive special education services, and gifted learners.

Students come to my school knowing that it has a cinematic arts and engineering focus.

Families come from areas many miles away to have access to some of the programs we offer. Many of my students are interested in producing films or getting into engineering fields such as robotics.

My Project

The books I have selected all relate to inquiry or project based learning in math and science. In a traditional educational model, students learn there is only one right answer and one correct way to solve a problem. In this model, creativity is not encouraged and students are rarely expected to solve problems in a variety of ways. Inquiry-based learning on the other hand, is focused on teaching students to become problem-solvers.

As my previous training has been the more traditional approach, I am now seeking resources that can help me teach my students how to be better problem solvers.

These STEM books will give me some insight of specific strategies I can implement now in my classroom that will get my students engaged, thinking differently, and taking more responsibility in their own learning.
