My Students

We start our typical day with morning breakfast in the classroom. Breakfast cart awaits for us by the classroom door. Two breakfast monitors and I would unpack the breakfast boxes: cartoons of low-fat milk, cereal, and juices.

I have 27 second graders where 100% of the students are on federal free meal plan.

We are a Title 1 school. More than half of the students have little or no skills in both reading and writing. Most struggle to reach benchmark in English Language Arts and math as well. I have been a primary teacher for almost two decades. I'm always open to learning and discovering new ways of teaching. Until recently, I was dumbfounded by a new teacher who showed me her new iPad. I was surprised that an iPad can be used to improve student learning. This teacher showed me how she incorporated technology into her classroom. I don't have the resources to implement this technology in classroom.

My Project

I will be using the iPad for my professional development in DIBELS Next training, a web-based system. DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. The test via DIBELS measures are supported by online, which streamlines the assessment process and supports seamless data collection and analysis. I need an iPad to navigate the website and also to learn how to use the tool to assess my students accurately and efficiently. After assessing them, I will need an iPad to access the cumulative data for all my students. The online access to my students' data will provide critical information to assist me in monitoring student progress and guide future instructional lessons. This technological tool provides targeted differentiation supports and helps me to differentiate instruction for my students.

The professional development of an iPad will increase my knowledge in technology and to provide best teaching practices to all my students to reach their academic standards.

If I can't be literate with technology, I won't be able to use the powerful learning tools to improve my student learning. It is my hope to be technological educated in bringing the 21st Century Skills into the classroom, especially to increase student achievement.
