A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I work with a bright and beautiful bunch of 9th - 12th grade student in a level III Autism and Life Skills program. Students have been referred to specialized programming because they struggle with academics and socialization and often need more support in their learning.
My students are creative, hard working, motivated, resilient problem solvers!
They have been faced with situations many adults wouldn't know how to handle. Yet they forge on with hope!
My student population is diverse in terms of cultures represented. Our free lunch population is above 90% . Many of my students are designated homeless/highly mobile.
My Project
My students need basic need and personal hygiene items along with food snacks while they are in transitional housing. Having basic needs supplies helps my students, many who are homeless highly/mobile, focus on academic success vs. worrying about hunger or hygiene issues (which our students are VERY sensitive about). When students have their basic needs met, they are more likely to participate and achieve in the school setting. They are more confident and willing to take risks in learning and in developing healthy relationships.
Students will package their own "care packages" in backpacks to take home on weekends or when they are in transition, shelter or doubled up with friends.
Students will also be able to visit their grade level social worker when they arrive to school hungry or in need of personal care items.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
