Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are unique, and it is reflected in their resilience. They are low-income students, with a great spirit. Although the circumstances surrounding their home life, can often weigh on them, students will always make an effort in a classroom that is caring.

My hope is that they are able to make the connection, life is so similar to math; it is not about our circumstances, but how well we can problem-solve around them.

It is the process, of taking the time to learn from every experience, that is valuable. As their teacher, it is my goal to teach them, and engrain in them, the GRIT and problem-solving skills that we inherit through mathematics. In my classroom, problem solving skills, apply to mathematics and beyond.

My Project

I am a first year teacher. I will be teaching high school math, in a Title I school in Houston, TX. My goal is to provide a classroom that also teaches teamwork, organization, and integrity. I believe these are skills that help us problem-solve real-life problems, as well as mathematical ones.

This project will help me close the gap, for those students who cannot afford supplies.

The goal is to provide some of the required materials so that students can have one less worry, and focus on curriculum instead. Students will feel more prepared, focused, and ready to learn. The caddy's, equipped with the necessary materials, will help me provide that for them. The caddies will also facilitate our group work; which will allow the students to help and learn from one another.

This project will also enable me to praise, and award my students for things beyond math; honesty, resilience, and kindness. Through small praise, like certificates, I hope to inspire their efforts at success. This way, their involvement in the classroom will increase.

It is essential to provide a classroom that is organized, and structured. To assist with this, I will be assigning classroom jobs, where students will be assigned responsibilities that contribute to class productivity. The binders will help me keep my students organized as they delegate their duties. This will also help students develop respect for the classroom.

The rolling cart will allow me to have a "mobile station"; where I can stay organized, and assist students individually or in groups. It will carry a stand-alone, dry erase board at the top, along with a variety of other resources. I hope this will allow me to help students, through their problem-solving journey more efficiently.
