Problem Solving and Design Process for Today's Engineering Challenges

Help me give my students 3D printing filament and a small 3d printer so that I'm able to send the 3d printer to various places to allow students to experience the 3d printing, prototyping process for engineering design.

My Students

Our school's mission is to position our students to be creative, dedicated, and resilient learners who embrace the power of diverse ideas, talents, and cultures to improve our world.

In our engineering and robotics courses, students are learning to design, test, document, and share their work through collaborative approaches for real-life engineering challenges, such as some of those in which our society is currently facing with COVID-19.

While learning about the user-centered, iterative design process, through creating and 3D printing PPE for our front line heroes, students are also designing solutions for people with disabilities in our community and state. Through utilizing cloud-based software for 3-D modeling, such as GrabCAD, students are creating, collaborating, and meeting with one another & to present their solutions that meet everyday challenges. Students need to be provided with the opportunity to research, investigate, and pursue real-world applications of engineering, and these challenges present just that chance.

Note: Our school is a K-12 public school that faces the same constraints and funding as all other public schools in the state of Florida.

My Project

By providing 3D printer filaments and a small, Dremel 3D20 printer for approximately 60 students to utilize, students will be able to see a big part of the engineering design process in action.

When students move through the full engineering design process of 3D modeling, 3D printing/rapid prototyping, testing, and documenting the results of their prototypes, they're more likely to understand the process and revise their designs so that they're ultimately created with a more user-centered, solid approach for the real-world engineering challenges presented.

With their improved, iterated designs in hand, they'll present their solutions to stakeholders in our local community and state.
