My Project

Problem-based learning (PBL) in the math classroom is crucial because it engages students in solving real-world problems, fostering deeper understanding and retention. This approach helps students develop critical thinking and collaboration skills, as they work together to explore and solve complex problems.

The impact of PBL on students is significant.

It encourages students to take ownership of their learning, promoting a sense of responsibility and productive struggle as they use materials such as wipe-off number paths and engage in activities promoted in the book, A Focus on Multiplication and Division: Bringing Research to the Classroom. As students engage with relevant, cognitively challenging content, they build confidence and resilience. The problem-based learning cycle, as outlined in the IM Implementation Support Guidance, involves phases like Warm-Up, Activities, and Synthesis, which guide students through the learning process effectively.

Ultimately, PBL helps students make meaningful connections between mathematical concepts and their applications, preparing them for real-life problem-solving.
