Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle schoolers are amazing. They're young enough that they're still enthusiastic about everything, and they're old enough to be aware that the choices they make every day will impact them in the future.

A big part of my job as a middle school teacher is building the skills of self-awareness and self-advocacy in each of my students.

I teach them to think about and understand what they need to be successful and how to get the supports they've identified.

Our school has a diverse grouping of students learning English as a new language, students with physical and learning disabilities, and students from every socio-economic background you can imagine. What do all of these kids have in common? Each and every one of them can learn. Each and every one of them can be successful. Each and every one of them is cared for in our school. Each and every one of them is special to me.

My Project

Middle school can be such a paradox. Students love to be social, but they also want to avoid distractions in class. Teachers and administrators want to encourage collaboration, but also want students to be able to work on their own. Since most middle schoolers have not mastered the art of focus, many tend to get distracted by their friends and neighbors in the classroom and can't seem to find a way to concentrate on their work even when they really want to.

Sometimes kids just need a quiet place to focus, think, create, and work.

Our classroom is built with collaboration in mind. Students sit in groups, facing each other, and spend most of their time working as a team. This is great a lot of the time. Sometimes students get overwhelmed with the noise and activity around them and they simply can't concentrate. Sometimes we want them to work on their own, but the temptation of their friends and neighbors is too much.

We're looking for a class set of privacy partitions and a partition holder to allow our students to set up a quiet space for them to work within the constraints of our classroom. The partitions would facilitate student choice and advocacy at times when they feel they need a distraction-free environment. The partitions would allow students some individual privacy, or they could structure their partitions to give partnerships privacy at larger tables.
