My Students

I teach fourth and fifth-grade Title I reading in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma. My students are a diverse group with varying levels of learning that are pulled out daily to learn new reading skills in our reading intervention lab. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunch.

Many of my students do not have home internet access and are struggling with keeping invested in their distance learning programs.

They love to read, and many have requested assistance to help them stay on top of their skills during this time at home. Although we cannot meet in person, the next best thing will be for me to provide them engaging opportunities to use at home now and throughout the summer.

My students have curiosity, creativity, compassion, and positive attitudes. They are truly amazing people. Together, we will make the most out of this situation and continue to make learning fun!

My Project

My students' social-emotional health is important, and it is a priority in my teaching. I make it a point to develop connections and build relationships and community with my class. During COVID 19, it is more important than ever. After being away from school since March, my students will return to our school in early August. Many will also choose to start the school year with distance learning.

We are asking for individual supplies (crayons and dry erase markers) and bags for each student to keep them in, to ensure that their social-emotional needs are being met.

Being a Title 1 reading classroom, we do not receive class supplies so this will ensure that when these students arrive in my classroom, they will not have the stress and worry that they will be infected by using community supplies.

Each student will have the confidence that not only will they have the supplies they need to be successful, but that they are clean and safe to use.

Social-emotional learning and educating the whole child is a priority in my class. My students will be able to make connections during distance learning and will take these supplies home with them when learning virtually. Social-emotional learning is important to ensure student performance, and these supplies will enable them to shift the focus from fear to learning.
