This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My middle school students are creative, curious, and full of potential—but many don’t have access to art supplies at home. They balance school while also taking on responsibilities like caring for younger siblings and helping with household duties. Art provides them with a much-needed outlet for self-expression and stress relief, but traditional drawing methods can be frustrating for those who don’t see themselves as “artists.”

That’s why I’m requesting a class set of Gelli printing materials to help 150+ students create visual journals—personal spaces where they can experiment, reflect, and build confidence through art.

How will these materials make a difference?

Gelli printing is a fun, engaging, and accessible process that allows students to create layered, textured prints without needing advanced drawing skills. Unlike traditional art techniques, there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to create, which makes it perfect for all ability levels. Students can experiment, play, and express themselves freely, reinforcing a growth mindset and creative confidence.

My goals are to:

Help students express themselves in new ways by using a medium that removes some of the typical creative barriers.

Inspire my students to open their art journals!

Provide a unique and engaging experience that will spark their creativity and show them that everyone can be an artist.
