"People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves, they have the first secret of success." My students displaying their work from business and marketing proposals in a relevant medium allows them to compete in the workplace.
Chosen to be in the business academy, based on 9th grade interviews and interest levels, our students are exposed to programs through the Network For for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), DECA (Distributive Educational CLubs of America) and Career and Technology Education.
We are making education relevant in a small 'school within a school' model. We advise and keep our 120 kids constantly tied in to business, marketing and thinking like an innovator and an entrepreneur through core and elective project based learning. Our school is large, but our smaller internal community is pushing at-risk students in East Bay, CA to be better, to dream, to design, to think, to invent, to sell, to research and to dream. My students are motivated and kind, excited for college and careers, and hoping, in most cases to change the generations of poverty and lack of education that their families have experienced.
My Project
The printer, toner and snacks will allow for late night collaboration over business plans, opening a student-run/student-managed store that will allow students retail, purchasing, planning, advertising and cost analysis opportunities, as well as set the stage for professional presentations at state and national business competitions. Hand drawn posters are a thing of the past in blended learning, and seeing marketing research, customer analysis, and advertising and marketing campaigns in poster-size production allows for real competition with more entitled and privileged schools.
Our students are able to build portfolios equivalent to that of real life businesses, and have the resources to produce quality and real-to-life work. Increasing skills in math, graphing, research and economics and being able to share their work in such a visible medium as a poster designed as a project product, is exposing kids to skills that today's workplace will value.
46% of our students are on free/reduced lunch.
Our lunch lines are often too long for kids to eat properly and after school work meetings are the norm, not the exception in our program. Our scholars are dedicated to the art of business, to selling, to innovate and to gain skills that will allow them windows to greater success in college or career of choice. A printed poster rather than a hand drawn marker project, automatically gives new life and a level of corporate professionalism.
