My Students

So much of what we do in schools is dependent on access to materials, basic and otherwise. In my 7th grade math classroom, I try to ensure that my students not only have what they need, but also have access to materials and experiences that are novel and intriguing.

My awesome students are in 7th grade, and represent a population of great diversity.

Many students are learning English as a second language, many have individualized learning needs, and most come to school from families that are struggling to make ends meet. My classroom is a place where this diversity is seen as a potential advantage, rather than a disadvantage. We are in the unique position to learn from one another and always take things to the next level. Our school is a place that not only welcomes these students, but creates the conditions for these kids to thrive, despite many barriers. Located in a high need area of Brooklyn, students have a safe haven for creative and intellectual stimulation. Despite such a positive school culture, the resources to make this possible are not readily available and as such, are often provided through the forward-thinking teachers and generosity of donors like you.

My Project

My students obviously need access to printed materials, in order to learn what they need to know to succeed in 7th grade and beyond. While we have a nice printer in the classroom, ink is incredibly expensive and we are beginning to run out! My students will use the toner requested in this project for all kinds of academic work, across multiple content areas. Having this resource is essential. In addition to a 2-D printer, we are also fortunate to have a 3-D printer in the classroom this year, something that the kids are extremely excited about. We would like to use the 3-D printer to do some hands-on explorations of mathematics in the context of design. Students will measure, calculate scale, design and print objects using 7th grade concepts of ratio and proportional reasoning. In order to make this possible, we need more filament, which is the 3-D equivalent of ink for a regular printer.

Donations to this project will help my students by giving them the materials needed to operate two important pieces of technology we are lucky to have in our classroom.

They will not only help give them continued access to basic educational needs, but also give them access to novel experiences with our 3-D printer. The donations to this project will revive our classroom as we continue through what has already been an exciting year of 7th grade math.
