Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an Adviser and Guidance Counselor at Bushwick Leaders' HS for Academic Excellence a school established September 2003 to serve a community that is at risk to many issues such as, high poverty, illiteracy, teen pregnancy rate and HIV. We started with 121 9th graders and have grown to 307 students. Our students wear a dress code that ensures our business appropriate attire. We are currently trying to mold the future leaders of Bushwick, NY and the world. Bushwick Leaders HS for Academic is in its third year, 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school has participated in college and community service trips since our inception. Last year we implemented a health fair and a salute to sisterhood. This year we are planning to continue our tradition and add a Salute to Brotherhood and Career Fair. All these activities are to broaden our students perception of what is available to them and what they are capable of in their futures. Currently, I am the only counselor in the school and since our growth I have not been provided with a printer. I am responsible for getting vital information out to our students and I have not been allowed to fully service my students because of my lack of printing capablities. Someone donated a printer to my office but unfortunately it did not work. I am deseparately trying to get information to my students, but has been limited by the lack of resources. If anyone can find it in their hearts to help this Guidance office, my students would greatly appreciate it. The computer is my only source of communication because the office does not have a phone. Please I am deseparate in the basement!
