This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am an occupational therapist working for the NYC Department of Education (DOE). My students range from 5 to 10 years old and many are low functioning academically. My students are diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, developmental delays, and sensory processing disorders. Despite their limitations, my students are amazing! They are eager to learn and participate in new activities; however, lack of experiences and materials are holding them back. They have a difficult time accessing their academics due to their high sensory needs and fine motor/gross motor delays.
My Project
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to use many of the hands-on materials that we used to use in therapy. I now rely even more heavily on worksheets to help my students be able to achieve their goals and improve academically. Unfortunately this year, due to budget cuts, I am no longer able to use the copy machine as frequently as I used to in the past and I do not have a printer in my room.
A printer would allow us to print worksheets to work on fine motor and visual-motor goals which impact my students' academics.
These worksheets will be used in school as well as at home in case we ever go remote. These worksheets will help facilitate what we learn at school and help parents work with their children even if they might not have access to printers at home.
