Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has a long history of educating our neighborhood. Our students are a mix of African American, Hispanic as well as students who have come to us from all over the world including new arrivals just learning the language and customs. We are a small school in a lower income neighborhood but as a teacher I have always made an effort to provide new learning experiences for the students in my art classes.

Our students have limited exposure to cultural experiences and artistic forms of expression.

As an art teacher I believe my students deserve access to different cultures, ways of thinking and forms of expression. When my students create a work of art they are also aware of the people who work in the same way and the artist and cultures that inspire them. In this way their lives are enriched and they may go on to use those skills to enrich their neighbors an community.

My Project

In the highly technological, image saturated world, children often take for granted the amount of work that goes into making an image. In the past, people treasured images more because they were not so common or easy to come by. The image revolution began in the middle ages with the creation of printmaking, an art practice that allowed an artist to create an image and easily make copies. This made the value of the images lower allowing more people to have art and images in their homes. This also led directly to the development of the printing press and mass produced books.

The purpose of this project is to educate students on the process of printmaking as a mass-production tool.

In the past I have done block printing projects on a small scale which could be pressed with a simple hand roller or a heavy book but that limits the experience quite a bit. With a pin press, the class will have the opportunity to make larger works of art and easily print larger quantities of copies.

Another part of this project is learning about the different cultures that have used printmaking and how very often they had different approaches or reasons for using it. In this I want to use the bountiful resources of the internet but very often I find myself without access to a projector to be able to share images with the class and have examples up on the board to inspire my students. Unfortunately the art room has not been a priority in being equipped with a PC projector and showing examples of art is an absolute necessity.
