Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in our classroom consists of spending the first half of class covering new historical material as we move forward through the curriculum which we follow up with student activities designed to explore the material we have covered in greater detail.

My students are bright, energetic kids who come from the lowest socioeconomic brackets of New York City.

Many of them live in neighborhoods where the schools are inadequate, and so they travel far from home (an hour or more) to get to our school every day. Most of the students graduated from overcrowded middle schools without sufficiently structured environments, and many arrive here under-skilled. Our school itself is well run, orderly and safe. We have an excellent graduation and college placement rate in spite of all the obstacles our students face. The administration and staff alike are dedicated to helping our students progress, and helping to connect them with learning opportunities that may change their perspective on school, and on life as well.

My Project

My students need a Brother - Network-Ready Wireless Black-and-White printer and black ink drum in our classroom so that we can maintain a print rich environment even when school resources are broken or unavailable. The printer is an absolute necessity for us. Because of a shortage of textbooks and other printed materials, teachers must print out and distribute all of the documents, maps, pictures, etc. that we work with on a daily basis in our classroom activities. School facilities are unfortunately inadequate. Over forty faculty share one photocopier and one printer - both of which are frequently broken. The amount of time that teachers must waste trying to track down the necessary copies to support creative and interesting lessons is truly disheartening and adds needless frustration and an added level of difficulty to the job. Unfortunately, there are many times when teachers create innovative print resources to use in class, but cannot distribute them or must alter and abbreviate them because our school lacks the necessary printing and copying facilities. This classroom printer would allow our class to bypass the problem, and use all of the great printed materials at our disposal.

The printer will improve the classroom by enabling us to access a wider range of classroom materials - documents, pictures, maps, texts, etc.

We will be able to explore history as it is meant to be explored - limited only by our own drive and imagination, not by inadequate facilities and lack of accessible technology. It will also help to lift our spirits and make us feel like we are valued. It gives us a sinking feeling to know that we don't have access to the best materials.
