Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in our classroom consists of many different activities involving texts, from primary sources, to other excerpts from fiction, biography, etc. The challenge is to make the texts accessible to everyone, and to build a love of reading and understanding that lasts a lifetime.

My students are in many ways typical teenagers, with all of their energy, moods, curiosity, etc., which makes them so interesting to be around.

They are also atypical in the challenges that many of them face - we are a high poverty school in the big city, where many of the students often have to navigate difficult, real world circumstances when they are not in school during the day.

My Project

Because all 40 teachers in our school share one photocopier in the teacher's room, often the resources teachers would prefer to use in the classroom become impractical. The printer allows us to access all of the important, or interesting, or just plain fun texts that we want and need to use, without any of the logistical concerns which become such a dispiriting and time draining experience for so many teachers. In a word, this printer means freedom for us. It allows us to work with texts closely - where each student gets their own copy to mark up, annotate, etc. Almost every activity we will do in class the entire year will come from the printer. Without it, we are lost!

The funding of this printer has already changed the classroom experience immeasurably for students and teacher.

Having the toner cartridges we need to keep the printer operational is the next step to ensuring that these benefits continue into the future. Having the printer and the toner to run it allows us to bypass yet another frustrating obstacle to learning in an already challenging environment, and to concentrate on what we are supposed to be doing: learning history.
