My Project

I am lucky to have a small Makerspace area in my library. Students in grades 2 - 4 are frequently able to access STEM challenges to creatively respond to stories, to think outside of the box, to work together on problem solving missions using all of their "Big Brain Energy." Since the Makerspace is ungraded, it is a wonderful opportunity to try new things without worry or fear of judgement. It's the perfect place to fail spectacularly and learn from their mistakes.

My younger students deserve the same opportunity.

I would love to use this grant to fill the Makerspace with building supplies for my K - 1 students. While I did add some extra Cubelet batteries to my supply list for the older students (because they are desperately needed) I tried to fill the rest of my list with items the primary grade students can use for engineering and design.

Each building set on my list can be combined with a set of challenges so that students can think creatively, use teamwork, and design something amazing.

My students already do some of this work. We frequently use Keva Planks for building challenges. But they are ready for more. With a wider variety of building materials, there will be no limit to what they can create. I also tried to choose things that can fit with a number of quality read alouds, as well. The best libraries give children access to great literature and opportunities to be innovative.
