My Students

Our classroom is an open and inviting environment designed to foster independent student learning. My students are thirsty for new materials to continue their education.

I teach in a public urban multi-age Montessori school with fifty-five first through fifth-grade students.

My students learn through small group and individual lessons, research and inquiry, and by going out into our community. My students come from all different backgrounds racially and socioeconomically and live in an urban setting. My co-teacher and I are piloting a combined Montessori 1st-6th grade classroom.

My students are involved in social justice and environmental conscious movements, taking a stand and trying to better the world. Our students work hard with the resources they have to follow their passions and find meaning in their education.

My Project

In a Montessori classroom, students drive much of their learning through independent and group research. When I explained Document Based Questioning to one of my 5th graders, he got very excited and asked me to submit a DonorsChoose.org project to receive the DBQ Project Elementary Binder. The following is his proposal to you, the donor.

"Hello, I am a fifth grader in Ms Megan's class.

DBQs are Document Based Questioning. You learn about primary sources. If we get this project, we will learn about primary sources. If we get this, we could learn about: Why should we protect wolves? Valley Forge: Would you have quit?

What does the Longhouse tell us about the Iroquois?

We will learn about history and problems in the world, about math, the government, weather, pollution, and Native Americans. It also helps you get better at writing essays.

For these reasons, may you please donate? Thank you for considering my project."

For all the reasons this student mentioned, this work would be an excellent addition to our classroom. Students are able to delve into the world of primary sources in an interesting, approachable way. Students think like a historian and a scientist, then argue their opinions based on fact. This material will be used for years to come by students in our classroom!
