I teach a prekindergarten inclusion class in a Title 1, low income school. In order to be accepted into our program, each student went through a screening process and all have been deemed "educationally at-risk". In addition, I also have students with autism and severe developmental delays. Many of my students come from low-income families and qualify for free or reduced lunch.

One goal I would like all my students to accomplish is for each of them to be able to write their first names by the end of the school year. However, some of my special needs students are having difficulty with basic skills, such as drawing lines, curves, and circles. Some of my typically developing students are having problems connecting these basic strokes to form letters. And many of my students in general are still having a hard time holding their pencils and crayons correctly while writing. I would like materials that will allow my students to practice these basic skills while keeping them engaged and excited about learning.

Before they can write, children first need opportunities to work on their fine motor skills and practice the motions needed to write. The Motor Shapes provide visual, tactile, and kinesthetic experiences required to learn how to do this. The Popcorn Fork reinforces proper pencil grasp. The Draw & Write Touch Board encourages children to draw pictures and practice the skills they need to start writing. And the Pre-Writing Motor Skills Boards lets them re-create the motions they'll use to form letters while providing a feel for the writing process. These materials will help me teach my special needs students the motions they need to learn so they can form letters, as well as give all my students opportunities to practice these skills on their own during our centers and small group times. They will also help future students by allowing me to provide these experiences starting on the first day of school, which may assist them in being able to write more than just their names by the end of the year.

Writing doesn't start with forming letters or require pencils or crayons. Students need activities that will first build necessary prewriting skills. Your donation will help teach and reinforce these basic fine motor skills. Thank you for considering my proposal.
