My Students

Our students are learning how to participate in daily routines such as washing hands and making healthy snack choices. We have a snack time built into our daily schedule, but we have a limited amount of healthy snack choices.

Our class is a Pre-K for students between the ages of 3-5 with special needs.

Their disabilities differ, but most are placed on the Autism spectrum. We are located on an elementary school campus and are the only Pre-K in the district. My students have their days planned full of interventions, assessments, and therapy sessions. They are all such little troopers that face great difficulties daily. When they come to school, I want them to be excited and happy. School should be challenging, but there's no reason it can't also be fun! Despite their disabilities, the students in my classroom are just like any other preschoolers. They love coming to school and exploring their environment in hands-on ways. We love music, dancing, and art (especially the messy kind!), but our favorite time of the day is story time! If you were to visit our classroom, you would probably be introduced to our favorite book, "Pete the Cat," within the first five minutes of your arrival, and possibly even sooner!

My Project

Snack time is one of the most important activities in our daily schedule. It encourages healthy eating habits, as well as provides an environment for the development of social skills. Many of our students are nonverbal and requesting snacks is a great motivator in getting them talking. I have requested pretzels and popcorn because they are not only healthier snack choices than cookies or candy, but they also start with the letter "P". Many of our students struggle with the letter "P" and talking about exciting foods like popcorn and pretzels encourages practice. We have a microwave at school and will be able to make the popcorn without much hassle. I have also requested some liquid hand sanitizer because my students are learning daily health habits such as cleaning our hands before we eat. The hand sanitizer will help teach my students about cleanliness and hygiene at meal times.

Health and hygiene are important concepts to introduce during early childhood in order to create lifelong healthy habits.
