Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a classroom where 15 young ladies, ten to twelve years old, sit in a circle. We call this time of day 'Crew' and the kids look forward to it. They are restless, energetic, and eager to talk to, connect, and converse with their peers. They hug and high five each other, talk about their successes and stresses, and consistently push back at the world around them.

My Crew of incredible young women are seeking connection with their peers and the pandemic has thwarted their ability and mine to meet their developmental needs.

Crew is the backbone of our Social Emotional Learning curriculum. It's where students speak their truth, learn about each other, and create their school family.

My Project

These materials will allow the students to create a Mail Art station in their homes. They will use Mail Art to connect to peers, their crew leader, and beyond.

This project specifically targets the Social Emotional Learning competencies of Self Management and Relationship Skills.

With these materials, the young ladies will be able to practice communication, goal setting, social engagement, and teamwork - even while they are isolated. Using a kindness curriculum specifically created for their age group, being kind and spreading kindness will be the focus of our learning. They will also flex their literacy skills with letter writing and delve into the history and contemporary discussion of the United States Postal System.
