Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a 6th-12th Community-Based Instruction program for students with moderate to severe needs in a school that serves approximately ninety percent, Latino students. The program serves students with autism, health impairments, and intellectual disability. In addition to barriers due to their disabilities, many of my students also encounter barriers resulting from language development and socioeconomic status. My students are working toward gaining and improving life skills, vocational skills, and functional academics.

Our program is designed to provide students with meaningful and engaging hands-on learning experiences that will help them obtain functional academic skills, and the skills necessary for transitions to adulthood.

I am very excited to see the program grow every year. Although this is a very exciting experience, it is also a challenging one. I need to ensure that I meet all of my students' needs; for some, it means being equipped with functional skills to be independent young adults.

My Project

My students want to work, live, and interact with their typical peers within the community, yet, finding the right employment in traditional businesses can be difficult. Hands-on experience is vital to their success as independent adults contributing to their community.

By providing my class with the Cricut Mug Press, you will be giving my students the opportunity to design products and develop small business skills.

I will be teaching them independent living and employment skills such as planning, budgeting, creating, and producing products to sell. My students will be using technology to design and advertise their products and maintain accounting records. We will teach social skills as well as money skills in a real-life situational environment.

With the Cricut Mug Press, they will design and make merchandise to sell in the community. We will be able to use the profits for community-based learning trips, group activities, and materials needed for future projects. This will allow them to learn adult life skills in fun real-life experiences.
